Mobile World Congress, today called simply MWC – Barcelona, is the biggest exhibition of mobile products and services. Every year, the biggest suppliers and innovators in the genre gather in Barcelona. During MWC 2019 about 2 400 different companies participated. During these days a conference was held with a programme aiming to preserve the visions affecting this rapidly growing industry. The event also included seminars spreading knowledge and possibilities for the visitors. Everything in the mobile business can be seen and learned about at this yearly event.
Every year there are awards in different categories. GLOMO stands for Global Mobile Award and an award in any category is a feather in the hat for the business behind the product. By the recognition behind the award, the company gets a lot of free publicity and an advantage on the competitors.
The award for “Best mobile infrastructure” went to Ericsson for their 5G high-band Massive MIMO. This is the first improved mobile solution for broadband on millimetric wave. With pioneering technique, Ericsson has succeeded in creating a broadband much faster than earlier and with a much better range than earlier solutions in the market. The jury´s comment was that the solution will give the users a cheaper solution per bit sent. The award for “Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough” (Companies more than $10million Annual Global Revenue) went to Huawei for their work on 5G and the technique to use existing hardware for developing 5G.
The award for “Best Overall Mobile Consumer Innovation” was given to the gaming company Epic Games for FORTNITE. In this game the player can choose a Multiplayer-mode where he can play with his friends or people on the web where they can create a perfect Fortnite world. Besides this the player can choose a Battle-mode to compete on being the “last man standing”. Fortnite is a game played by millions of gamers around the world. There are competitions and World Championships where price money is very big. The jury´s motivation was that Epic Games, over time, has managed to overcome a long-term gap when it comes to the multiplayer-genre, giving their players a real platform experience through their innovations. Epic games also stand as the winner in the category of “Best Content and Media Innovation” for “Judges Choice” for the Fortnite Franchise.
In the category “Leadership Award” which is one of the highest ranked awards, Nokia stands as the winner for their Nokia 5G Future X – Unleashing the Potential of 5G. Through this innovation Nokia will release the full potential for the fourth industrial revolution. This solution is driven by digitalising physical systems to increase productivity, improve efficiency and in the end to create time and profitability. Nokia’s 5G Digital Design System is a use-case-driven design working across the entire spectrum of the network, ensuring business and service goals. By shortening the process time to market with ten times it increases the operative effect with ten times and reduces the risk of errors with approximately ten times as well. The jury motivates the win with Nokia showing a great importance to the technical and business related developing of 5G.
